My Story
Note Part of the adoption process is a meet and greet at foster's home so please check the distance before you apply. Also if you are gone for the holidays wait until you return to apply. We can not hold dogs.
Meet Lexie, an adorable, nervous, and sweet approx 3.5yr old 11.6lb smooth black and tan doxie. She came into rescue as her previous owners did not understand her anxiety, ways to reassure her, or ways to help build her confidence naturally. She does not need to be on medications for her anxiety and is a wonderful and fun loving dog when her needs are met. She is up to date on vaccinations, spayed, and has some specific requirements for her forever family to ensure her best interests are addressed.
She has had minimal socialization so everything is big and scary to her. Lexie is a scaredy cat as any loud noise, fast movement, new environment, or new people/animals will send her scurrying, hiding and barking. She tends to keep her ears folded and tucked back until she begins to feel safe. She will whine and cry if she can’t see you or at least be near you as she does have separation anxiety.
Lexie tends to pick her favorite person that she feels most comfortable with and will become your very best friend as she follows you everywhere. She needs a calm, confident human she can depend on for direction in new situations to reassure her, build her confidence, and ease her anxiety. She will open up completely once she learns to trusts you and then be prepared for kisses, cuddles, tail wags, and even getting a little silly.
During her time with her foster family, we have not seen any signs of being mean, aggression, biting, or dominance. She is mostly just fearful and easily startled. Once she learns to trusts you, she will look to you for guidance when she is uneasy. Lexie needs someone who works from home, retired, or at least home more often than not. She has learned to be crated, as needed during the day, while humans run errands, etc. but she does best just hanging out with you. Lexie walks well on a leash and does really well with going potty outside and not having accidents in the house.
Her favorite places are right by your side in a soft fluffy bed, on your lap, curled up under blankets, and of course the big human bed at night. Lexie would do well in a home with no children and one that is slower paced with not a lot of activity. She could be an only dog as she does tend to prefer human interaction above all things but she could also have a fellow low key companion dog sibling that is calm, confident, easy going, understands personal space and will not provoke her. She will not do well with an alpha dog, high energy/excitement, or another dog with high anxiety/nervousness. While she hasn’t directly played with her foster siblings, she does follow them around and lay with them on the couch but again prefers to be on her favorite human’s lap above all.
Because Lexie is so easily startled, a fenced yard is a must and use of a harness when walking on a leash. Because she is a loud barker, she would not do well in an apartment or condo setting with shared walls. Keep in mind, patience is key, go slow, and she will look for your leadership to calm her down and offer her comfort. She just needs time and patience to show you how sweet and fun she really is.
